For those of you who have been following my blog/life, you know that I recently got an email that said I had passed the Jeopardy! online test and was invited to go to an in-person audition in New York City.

This turned out to be, despite my earliest instincts, not a hoax.

Which was a good thing. I've long wanted to be on Jeopardy! and I was happy upon arriving at the Sheraton hotel in New York City that there actually was an audition there and that my name was on the list.

Upon arrival, I found the registration table and picked up my application. It asked for all the typical biographical information plus stuff like times I wouldn't be able to tape the show (I am always available to Jeopardy!, so I listed no dates of unavailability) and people I knew who were on the show. I only know of one or two and our contacts were incidental and fleeting, but I listed it. It also asked if I had any Quiz Bowl experience. I have none, though I am intrigued by the pop culture based quiz TRASH....wanna look into that for the future.

Then came the whirlwind. Her name was Maggie. Quickly, she swept us in the conference room after we had our Polaroids taken. (And given how Polaroid no longer makes the film for those cameras anymore, that may be the last Polaroid ever taken of me) I gave a huge smile and the picture wasn't half bad.

So much happened over the next 2 hours, it's really all a blur. In a nutshell, Maggie, the contestant coordinator in charge of everything gave us a really great stand-up routine. She was funny, she was self-deprecating, she was silly, she was flirty, she was glib and she was loud. She was great, always complimenting us when we did something well or when she needed more, she'd ask nicely, but directly

Our first task after our instructions was a 50 question in-person test. All of us in the room had already taken the online test and had passed. So we were all expected to do well. I don't remember most of the test, but I think I did at least okay. Unfortunately, we never will find out just how well we did as they keep them secret, along with the importance of one test compared to the other..

Regardless, once the tests were scored, we all went up in threes to play Jeopardy!. We used the same kind of "signaling devices" they use on the show and we were instructed how and when to ring in. I did okay, I suppose, the first clue I got wrong and I think I got two or three others right. After a brief time playing, we all got a brief interview. Mine focused on working for what I described as a large Philadelphia-based cable company. I made them laugh a few times and I got an unsolicited compliment from Maggie about my "beautiful smile". That made me feel good.

I was the last person of the entire session to be interviewed. After that, we were dismissed with the knowledge that were were now in the contestant pool for the next 18 months and may be called on at any time with just a few weeks notice. So hopefully, that wasn't the end of my Jeopardy! story.

Thanks to everyone for the great supportive emails and comments. It really meant a lot and helped me through my initial nervousness.

Growing up, I kind of helped look out for my brothers and sister. I was the person who calmed my mom down when she got too upset. I am the person who can fix the cable or your computer. I was also the guy my mom could lean on when my dad got sick those times.

Unfortunately, I am also the person who withdrew the most. It got better as it went along, but it was pretty bad for awhile in my teen years and early 20s. I am not by nature confrontational, so if I had a problem, I'd retreat to the cave.

As it stands now, I'm the closest thing the family has to an get-together organizer, which is sad because I generally suck at that. I think I did well when a bunch of us went to Disney World in January (I can't believe that was three months ago!)

I wish I was someone to look up to. But I can't answer that question. I can only aspire to it.

Louisa and I have a competition every year during the Oscars over who can pick the most winners. Louisa has beaten me every single time. It's like six in a row now. One of those years we created a forfeit where the loser has to watch a movie of the winner's choosing.

I've thought about what I'd make Louisa watch. I am really bad at knowing if she'll like something on TV or in the movies. Of course, this assume I would be kind and make her watch something I think she'd like. Thankfully, she's been relatively merciful to me, although she did try to get me to watch the whole 124 hour "Pride and Prejudice" thing one year. That is NOT a movie.

This year it was "Little Women" starring Winona Ryder before she became a kleptomaniac. I kept putting off the movie, not expecting to like it, but I did. Winona was great, reminding me why I liked her in the first place.

Because of my stupidity, I didn't realize the great switcheroo between Kirsten "Snaggletooth" Dunst and Samantha "Way Prettier than Dunst" Mathis. Odd that Mathis would go on to be in "American Psycho" with Christian "Newsies" Bale. Makes the whole movie seem more unseemly.

But the thing that I most observed in the movie "Little Women" is how wrong Ryder and Gabriel Byrne were for each other. Maybe the book was different, but it seemed creepy to me. Maybe if I knew more about his character...nah, it'd still be weird.

Shouldn't be up this late. Been really bad at going to bed on time
recently. Thankfully I have off tomorrow and am
heading to my childhood
homestead.

Haven't been back since Christmas and I need to clear
some stuff out before they sell the house. It's funny, I thought I'd be
sadder than I am that it's being sold. Maybe I don't believe it yet.

In
other news, my outlook on work has greatly improved once I found a way
to make sales. There's been an insane push to have everyone who is on
the phone sell to the customer. According to our evaluation charts,
it's the second most important thing they measure us on after repeat
calls.

The problem for most people is that they weren't hired
as salesmen. They were hired to be tech support. Tech support and sales
are certainly two different skill sets. Put that together with the
other separate skill of customer service and you are asking for a lot
from people.

The good news is that my experience being with
the company before has kicked in and I'm selling very well now. I
continue, though, to look for better positions in the company to move
to.

The picture in this post is one of Louisa's favorite things from the last few days. It's from the icanhascheezburger.com people's new website ihasahotdog.com.
